The EU Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID 1) requires investment firms to provide clients with information about financial instruments including appropriate guidance on and warnings of the risks so that they are able to understand the nature and risks of the investment service and of the specific type of financial instrument.

The tax would be levied on all transactions on financial instruments between financial institutions when at least one party to the transaction is located in the EU.
