The plan for implementing the sustainable development strategy drawn up by the European Commission is already filling the vacuum between what we say and what we do, by way of legislation, to protect the environment and public health and encourage the application and mainstreaming of the environmental dimension in all our policies.

While confirming the importance it attaches to these matters, the Commission intends to launch new initiatives in the next few months which will be concerned - above and beyond what is already set out in the White Paper on the Internal Market - with the following areas : - the right to vote in local elections - report to the European Parliament; - the coordination of actions by development volunteers, profiting from the experience of France and Germany; - increasing the transparency of Community law by codification endeavours, more effective handling of complaints and intensified information of the public; - work by young people to restore monuments or protect the environment; - symbolic actions (postage stamps, vehicle number plates, etc.); - sport.
Tant en confirmant donc la priorite qu'elle attache a ces dossiers, la Commission poursuit dans son action et se propose de lancer dans les prochains mois des nouvelles initiatives qui portent, au-dela de ce qui est deja prevu dans le Livre Blanc Marche Interieur, notamment sur les domaines suivants : - droit de vote aux elections locales - rapport au Parlement Europeen; - coordination des actions de volontaires pour le developpement, profitant de l'experience franco-allemande; - renforcement de la transparence du droit communautaire, par des actions de codification, par un traitement plus efficace des plaintes et par une information accrue du citoyen; - chantiers des jeunes pour la restauration des monuments ou pour la sauvegarde de l'environnement; - actions symboliques (timbres postes, plaques mineralogiques, etc); - sports.
