IN-CONTEXT TRANSLATIONS

Lack of access to energy remains a major brake to further development of the country. As Commissioner Piebalgs explained: "There can be no development without energy and, unfortunately, the energy situation in Burundi remains one of the worst in the world, with daily power cuts being experienced by most people". The new initiative (€50 million) could include rural electrification, small and medium hydro projects and measures related to energy infrastructure. The project will also bring the Commission one step closer to delivering on its pledge to provide energy access for 500 million people by 2030 which was made within UN-led Sustainable Energy for All Initiative.

Estimates show that the energy required to provide energy for all will only increase total energy consumption by around 1% of present commercial energy consumption. However, energy access for the poor is not only an issue of the quantity of energy produced in a country.

Underlines that maximising the use of renewable energy resources represents the ideal path for the international community to take in achieving universal access to modern energy services, while combating climate change; calls on the Commission to develop an action plan to mainstream the objective of universal energy access into relevant EU policies, as well as into all sectors of development policy, such as agriculture, industry, trade, health and water, and to ensure there is coherence across policies and sectors for the universal energy access objective;
