Hon. Marjory LeBreton (Leader of the Government): Honourable senators, it is with great pleasure that I rise today to welcome the Honourable Salma Ataullahjan to the Senate of Canada.

I would like to mention another Irishman, one whom perhaps not everyone will know, particularly not the new Members, but you know him – our friend and former colleague Joe McCartin, who was a Member of this Parliament from 1979 until the last European elections, and was the only member of our group to be honoured by the award of the Robert Schuman Medal.

– (FR) Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, as you can imagine, I am deeply committed to the regional and cohesion policy, not only because I have the honour of directing this policy on behalf of the Commission and in conjunction with my colleagues, Franz Fischler and Anna Diamantopoulou, but also for another, more political reason, which is that I believe, as several of you have said, that the cohesion policy, which has grown in importance over a 15-year period, symbolises a certain concept of the European Union.
- Monsieur le Président, Mesdames et Messieurs les Députés, comme vous l'imaginez, je suis profondément attaché à cette politique régionale et de cohésion, non seulement parce que j'ai l'honneur d'animer cette politique au nom de la Commission et en accord avec mes collègues Franz Fischler et Anna Diamantopoulou, mais aussi pour une autre raison, plus politique : c'est que, pour moi, comme plusieurs d'entre vous l'ont dit, cette politique de cohésion, qui est montée en puissance depuis quinze ans, est symbolique d'une certaine idée de l'Union européenne.
