Therefore, the petitioners request the House of Commons to implement a new national museum policy that: reinstates full funding to the museum assistance program that was cut in 2006; increases the museum assistance program by $75 million; provides multi-year annual operating funding to ensure that museums can operate in a stable environment, therefore allowing them to plan for long term success; provides special project funding to allow museums to undertake special projects such as travelling exhibits and professional development conservation; and provides research funding for museums to conduct important educational research, as they currently do not qualify for funds from other federal agencies such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

At the outcome of the debate, the President drew the following conclusions : The Council - acknowledges with interest the Note from the Presidency on the Science and Technology cooperation between the European Union and Mediterranean third countries; - confirms, on this occasion, the importance of such cooperation in the general framework of international cooperation of the European Union in the field of scientific research and technological development; - looks forward with interest to future actions to be undertaken in view of an efficient and concrete follow-up to the decisions adopted in Barcelona in November 1995 in the field of scientific research; - expects that all delegations be adequately represented at scientific level in the Monitoring Committee so that positions on future activities to be implemented can be coordinated in a satisfactory way.

The Objective 2 programmes focus on four fields of action : - industrial expansion, diversification and renewal for example investment in the redevelopment of Almelo city centre to make it more attractive to businesses, and 4.5 MECU for work on the port area of Delfzijl; - expansion of applied scientific research; - promotion and improvement of tourist potential; - redevelopment of industrial areas and improvement of the socio- economic structure.
