Dat wordt ook erkend door artikel 1 van het NAVO-verdrag, waarvan het verdrag van 1971 is afgeleid, en volgens hetwelk " The Parties undertake, as set forth in the Charter of the United Nations, to settle any international dispute in which they may be involved by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security and justice are not endangered, and to refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force in any manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations" .
Ce fait est confirmé par l'article 1 du Traité de l'Atlantique nord selon lequel « Les parties s'engagent, ainsi qu'il est stipulé dans la Charte des Nations unies, à régler par des moyens pacifiques tous différends internationaux dans lesquels elles pourraient être impliquées, de telle manière que la paix et la sécurité internationales, ainsi que la justice, ne soient pas mises en danger, et à s'abstenir dans leurs relations internationales de recourir à la menace ou à l'emploi de la force de toute manière incompatible avec les buts des Nations unies».
