Alarmed, at the same time, about certain practices which violate most fundamental human rights and freedoms and are contrary to international human rights treaties which form the cornerstone of post-World War II human rights protection, such as indefinite imprisonment of foreign citizens without charge and without examining the legality of their detention by an independent and impartial tribunal, degrading treatment during interrogations, the interception of private communications without subsequently informing those concerned, extradition to countries likely to apply the death penalty or use torture or ill-treatment, and detention and harassment on the grounds of political or religious activity,

Reiterates the importance for the Republic of Moldova to adhere to the principles of democracy, the protection of human rights and the rule of law, including the independence of the judiciary, notes in this respect the controversial court decision against Valeriu Pasat, which raises concerns from the viewpoint of internationally accepted standards of justice, and recommends that the Parliamentary Team on Moldova explore thoroughly the legal and human rights aspects of the Pasat case and inform the Assembly of its findings;
24. Réaffirme qu'il est important que la République de Moldova adhère aux principes de la démocratie, de la protection des droits de l'homme et de l'état de droit, y compris au principe de l'indépendance de la justice, note à cet égard la décision controversée d'un tribunal contre Valeriu Pasat, préoccupante du point de vue de la conformité avec les normes internationalement reconnues en matière de justice, et recommande à l'Equipe parlementaire sur la Moldova d'examiner de manière approfondie les aspects juridiques et liés aux droits de l'homme de cette affaire, puis d'informer l'Assemblée de ses conclusions;

1. endorses a comprehensive approach to security whereby the political, economic, social, cultural, and environmental conditions in which people live are responsive to human rights and democracy; thereby enabling peoples to contain or avert threats to their lives, livelihoods and human dignity; therefore underlines the urgency of political reform in order to achieve social and economic development, fight against poverty and ensure food security in the Mediterranean; in this context it is important to work for a new partnership policy in the Mediterranean involving a broader support in the future including through the ENP and the UfM, by means of projects and measures to stimulate cooperation, exchange and investment in the region;

– (DE) Mijnheer de Voorzitter, ik wil een mondeling amendement indienen tot wijziging van paragraaf 8. Voor het laatste derde gedeelte stel ik de volgende Engelse formulering voor: “in expecting action by Iran to address also other concerns of the EU regarding the fight against terrorism, the respect for human rights and Iran’s approach to the Middle East peace process” en ik verzoek u mijn voorstel aan te nemen.
- (DE) Monsieur le Président, je voudrais proposer un amendement oral au point 8, dont le dernier tiers devrait dire: «qui attend que l’Iran agisse dans d’autres domaines préoccupant l’UE, notamment la lutte contre le terrorisme, le respect des droits de l’homme et l’approche de l’Iran à l’égard du processus de paix au Proche-Orient», et vous demande d’accepter cette proposition.
