Een borstreconstructie met eigen weefsel kost initieel meer qua ingreep maar blijkt in verschillende wetenschappelijke publicaties op lange termijn een betere optie, zowel in termen van economie als welzijn, ten opzichte van een reconstructie met implantaten (Matros et al., Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2015; Hu et al., Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2009; Eltahir et al., Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2009).
Selon différentes publications scientifiques, la reconstruction mammaire par tissus autologues est, au départ, une intervention chirurgicale plus coûteuse que la reconstruction par implants, mais s'avère, à long terme, un meilleur choix tant du point de vue financier que de celui du bien-être de la patiente (Matros et al., Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2015; Hu et al., Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2009; Eltahir et al., Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2009).
