Suicide as compared with other causes of death Taking into account the entire population, there were 2 146 deaths by suicide in 1997 out of a total of 103 800 deaths. This makes suicide the 10 th most frequent cause of death (after, in decreasing order, diseases of the circulatory system, tumours, diseases of the respiratory system, cerebrovascular diseases, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, diseases of the nervous system and the sense organs, endocrine and blood diseases, mental disorders, ill-defined symptoms and clinical pictures) (see table 3).
