As was explained in section 4.6, there is a great need for setting up a post-hospital follow-up of suicidal individuals, as simply treating the physical consequences of the act does not suffice.

These experiences show that there are different ways in which post-hospital follow-up care can be provided to suicidal patients and that it is of crucial importance that there should be a system set in place that ensures that this is indeed the case.
Ces expériences nous montrent qu’il existe différentes manières d’assurer le suivi posthospitalier des suicidants.

- it is reassuring for the hospital staff to know that the suicidal patients they allow to leave will be given specific follow-up care – in addition, the “response” they give to these suicidal individuals, through the CIP, reconnects them to the basic “repairing” function of their job;
- il est sécurisant pour le personnel hospitalier de savoir que le patient suicidant qu’il laisse sortir va pouvoir bénéficier d’un suivi spécifique – la « réponse » qu’il apporte au suicidant via la CIP le reconnecte en outre au caractère « réparateur » fondamental de sa profession;

- If the suicidal individuals express a wish for therapeutic follow-up, the cell refers them to a hospital institution, a mental health service or an independent therapist for treatment.
