Omschrijving: Dit is een slecht omschreven stoornis waarvan de nosologische validiteit niet vaststaat. De categorie is bedoeld om de verschijnselen in onder te brengen van een groep kinderen met ernstige zwakzinnigheid (IQ onder 34) wier problemen vooral te maken hebben met hyperactiviteit en met aandacht, evenals met stereotiep gedrag. Ze verbeteren meestal niet onder medicatie met stimulerende middelen (anders dan kinderen met een normaal IQ) en kunnen op die middelen een ernstig dysfore reactie vertonen (soms met psychomotore vertraging); in deze groep neigt de hyperactiviteit tijdens de adolescentie plaats te maken voor hypoactiviteit (een patroon dat niet gebruikelijk is bij hyperkinetische kinderen met normale intelligentie). Dit syndroom gaat ook vaak samen met verschillende specifieke- of globale vertragingen van de ontwikkeling. De mate waarin het gedragspatroon een functie is van het lage IQ dan wel van organisch hersenletsel is niet bekend.
