Het Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP) bestaat sinds maart 2000 binnen EMEA en wil de ontwikkeling van weesgeneesmiddelen stimuleren.
Le « COMP (Committee for Orphan Medical Products) a été créé en mars 2000 au sein de l’EMEA (European Agency for the Evaluation of medicinal Products).

Dit statuut, toegekend door het Europees comité voor weesgeneesmiddelen (Committee for orphan medicinal products of COMP), zal de bevoegde firma dan in staat stellen de registratieprocedure voor dit type van geneesmiddel op te starten. Dankzij dat statuut zal de firma ook de verschillende, eerder opgenoemde voordelen kunnen genieten.
Ce statut, octroyé par Comité européen pour les médicaments orphelins (Commitee for Orphan Medicinal Products - COMP), permettra ensuite à la société responsable d’entamer la procédure d’enregistrement réservée à ce type de médicament et de bénéficier des différents avantages précités.

De European Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP) definieert een weesziekte als ‘een levensbedreigende of zeer ernstige chronische, evoluerende ziekte die niet meer dan 5 per 10.000 Europeanen treft’.
Le Comité européen des Médicaments Orphelins (COMP) reconnaît une maladie comme étant une maladie orpheline dès lors qu’elle est « grave, chronique, évolutive et qu’elle engage le pronostic vital des patients qui en sont atteints ». Ceux-ci doivent représenter une « population inférieure à 5 pour 10 000 habitants sur l’ensemble du territoire européen».
