Omschrijving: Anorexia nervosa is een stoornis die wordt gekenmerkt door welbewust gewichtsverlies, op gang gebracht en volgehouden door de patiënt. De stoornis komt meestal voor bij meisjes in de adolescentie en jonge vrouwen, maar jongens en jonge mannen in dezelfde leeftijdscategorieën kunnen de stoornis ook vertonen, evenals kinderen tegen de puberteit en oudere vrouwen tot aan de menopauze. De ziekte is verbonden met een specifieke psychopathologie waarin afschuw van dikte en vormeloosheid van de lichaamscontour voortdurend aanwezig is als een zich opdringende overwaardige gedachte. De patiënten stellen zichzelf een lage gewichtslimiet. Doorgaans is er ondervoeding in wisselende mate van ernst met als gevolg endocriene en metabole veranderingen en ontregelingen van lichaamsfuncties. De symptomen omvatten beperking van het voedingspakket, overdreven lichaamsbeweging, opwekken van braken en laxeren en gebruik van eetlustonderdrukkers en diuretica.
