Grâce aux connaissances actuelles des sciences médicales, il est possible, dans de nombreux cas, de déterminer la cause exacte d’un décès cardiaque subit chez les jeunes. De nombreuses affections peuvent en être à l’origine, notamment une cardiomyopathie hypertrophique (CMH), une cardiomyopathie dilatée, une cardiomyopathie arythmogène du ventricule droit, une origine anormale des artères coronaires, des troubles du rythme cardiaque héréditaires primaires comme le syndrome du QT long (LQTS), mais il peut s’agir tout autant d’affections cardiaques acquises comme la souffrance coronarienne prématurée ou une myocardite virale.
