Steeds vaker wordt chemotherapie gecombineerd met zogenoemde ‘doelgerichte geneesmiddelen’, een vertaling van het Engelstalige begrip ‘targeted therapies’.

Bij gebruik van epirubicine in chemotherapie gecombineerd met andere potentieel cardiotoxische geneesmiddelen (bv. 5-fluorouracil, cyclofosfamide, cisplatine en taxanes), alsook bij het gelijktijdige gebruik van andere cardioactieve verbindingen (bv. calciumkanaalblokkers) moet de hartfunctie tijdens de behandeling opgevolgd worden.
