Omschrijving: Aanhoudend eten van niet voor consumptie bestemde stoffen (zoals aarde, verfbladders, etc.). Het kan voorkomen als één van vele symptomen die deel uitmaken van een uitgebreidere psychiatrische stoornis (zoals autisme) of als een betrekkelijk geïsoleerd psychopathologisch gedrag; alleen die laatste vorm is hier geclassificeerd. Het verschijnsel doet zich het meest voor bij zwakzinnige kinderen en indien er tevens zwakzinnigheid aanwezig is, dient F70-F79 als de hoofddiagnose gekozen te worden.

Il peut faire partie d'un trouble psychiatrique plus global (tel un autisme) ou constituer un comportement psychopathologique relativement isolé. C'est seulement dans ce dernier cas que l'on fait le diagnostic de pica. Ce comportement s'observe surtout chez des enfants présentant un retard mental; dans ce dernier cas, le retard mental doit constituer le diagnostic principal (F70-F79).
