Natriumpicosulfaat is een lokaal werkend stimulerend laxans dat na bacteriële splitsing in het colon overgaat in het actief laxerende bestanddeel bis-(p-hydroxyfenyl)-pyridyl-2-methaan (BHPM), wat een tweevoudige werking heeft, het stimuleren van de mucosa van zowel de dikke darm als het rectum.
