De toestand kan een abnormale voortzetting betekenen van normale kinderlijke incontinentie of een verlies van continentie na reeds verworven sfincterbeheersing of de opzettelijke productie van feces op ongeschikte plaatsen ondanks normale fysiologische sfincterbeheersing.
