IN-CONTEXT TRANSLATIONS

A. overwegende dat er in verscheidene Europese landen een groeiende bezorgheid heerst over de gevolgen van blootstelling aan bestraling of inademing van giftige stoffen door het gebruik van wapens met verarmd uranium (depleted uranium), waarvan enkele soldaten die hebben deelgenomen aan de militaire operaties in het voormalige Joegoslavie en met name in Bosnië in 1995 en in Kosovo in 1999 het slachtoffer zouden zijn; overwegende dat indien er een oorzakelijk verband tussen het gebruik van deze wapens en de geconstateerde gezondheidsproblemen wordt vastgesteld, dit eveneens reden zou zijn tot grote bezorgdheid over de gezondheid van de burgerbevolking in de betreffende gebieden ;
A. whereas in several European countries there is growing concern about the consequences of exposure to radiation or the inhalation of toxic dust resulting from the use of depleted uranium weapons, which may have affected a number of soldiers who took part in the military operations in the former Yugoslavia, particularly in Bosnia in 1995 and Kosovo in 1999; whereas were a causal link to be established between the use of such weapons and the health problems brought to light, there would be good reason for serious concern about the health of the civilians in the areas affected,

L. overwegende dat bestraling met radioactieve (gamma) stralen de veiligheid van werknemers, gezondheid en milieu in gevaar brengt ten gevolge van niet-opzettelijke blootstelling en lekken,
L. whereas irradiating with radioactive (gamma) sources poses safety risks to workers, health and environment through accidental exposure and leaks,

3. dringt erop aan dat tevens onderzoek wordt gedaan naar de eventuele effecten op lange termijn op de gebombardeerde plaatsen en derhalve op de burgerbevolking, of deze nu het gevolg zijn van directe blootstelling (inademing of bestraling) of van indirecte (besmetting van de voedselketen en van water);
3. Calls for an assessment also to be made of the possible long-term effects on the sites which were bombed and, therefore, on the civilian population, whether due to direct exposure (inhalation or irradiation) or indirect exposure (contamination of the food chain and water);

2. verzoekt de Raad en de lidstaten een onafhankelijke Europese medische werkgroep op te richten die een onderzoek moet instellen naar kwesties in verband met de relatie tussen het gebruik van munitie met verarmd uranium en het aantal gevallen van overlijden en ziektes onder soldaten die hebben deelgenomen aan de militaire operaties in Bosnie en Kosovo; dringt erop aan dat tevens onderzoek wordt gedaan naar de eventuele effecten op lange termijn op de gebombardeerde plaatsen en derhalve op de burgerbevolking, of deze nu het gevolg zijn van directe blootstelling (inademing of bestraling) of van indirecte (besmetting van de voedselketen);

Calls on the Council and the Member States to set up an independent European medical working party responsible for looking into the issues arising in connection with the relationship between the use of depleted uranium munitions and the death or illness of some of the soldiers who took part in the military operations in Bosnia and Kosovo; calls for an assessment also to be made of the possible long-term effects on the sites which were bombed and, therefore, on the civilian population, whether due to direct exposure (inhalation or irradiation) or indirect exposure (contamination of the food chain);
