Als adjunct-secretaris-generaal en eerste voorzitter van de Effectbeoordelingsraad van de Commissie inzake betere regelgeving (2006-2010) en in zijn huidige functie als secretaris-generaal (vanaf september 2015) heeft Alexander Italianer een belangrijke rol gespeeld bij het nakomen van de belofte van de Commissie om groot te zijn in grote zaken en klein in kleine zaken.
