(2) De Raad Culturele en Audiovisuele Zaken van 28 mei 1998 heeft met zijn goedkeuring van de resultaten van de te Birmingham gehouden Europese audiovisuele conferentie beklemtoond dat het wenselijk is de ontwikkeling van een sterke en concurrerende Europese audiovisuele-programma-industrie aan te moedigen, daarbij met name rekening houdend met de Europese culturele verscheidenheid en de bijzondere omstandigheden van kleine taalgebieden.
(2) On 28 May 1998, the Council, in approving the outcome of the European Audiovisual Conference in Birmingham, highlighted the desirability of encouraging the development of a strong and competitive European audiovisual programme industry, taking particular account of Europe's cultural diversity and the specific conditions obtaining in restricted linguistic areas.

De Commissie heeft met het voorzitterschap van het Verenigd Koninkrijk van 6 tot 8 april 1998 te Birmingham de Europese audiovisuele conferentie "Uitdagingen en mogelijkheden van het digitale tijdperk” gehouden.
From 6 to 8 April 1998, the Commission, in collaboration with the United Kingdom presidency, held a European audiovisual conference on "Challenges and opportunities of the digital age”, in Birmingham.

Overwegende dat de Commissie de beroepsbeoefenaars uit de sector heeft geraadpleegd over de in dit Groenboek uiteengezette opties, met name door van 30 juni tot 2 juli 1994 in Brussel een Europese conferentie over de audiovisuele sector te houden; dat uit deze raadpleging naar voren is gekomen dat er grote behoefte bestaat aan een versterkt programma ter ondersteuning van de Europese audiovisuele industrie, met name op het gebied van opleiding;

Whereas the Commission consulted the people in the industry on the options put forward in the Green Paper, in particular by holding the 'European Audiovisual Conference' in Brussels from 30 June to 2 July 1994; whereas the consultation process revealed a strong desire for an enhanced programme of support for the European audiovisual industry, in particular in the area of training;

(5) Overwegende dat de Commissie de vakkringen heeft geraadpleegd over de in dit Groenboek uiteengezette opties, met name door van 30 juni tot 2 juli 1994 in Brussel een Europese conferentie over de audiovisuele sector te houden; dat gebleken is dat er duidelijk vraag is naar een versterkt programma ter ondersteuning van de Europese audiovisuele industrie, met name op het gebied van ontwikkeling en distributie;
