Zich in gedachten verplaatsen in de fobie veroorzakende situatie wekt doorgaans anticipatie-angst op. Fobische angst en depressiviteit gaan dikwijls samen. Of twee diagnosen nodig zijn, fobische angst en een depressieve episode of slechts één, wordt bepaald door het verloop van de twee ziekten in de tijd en door therapeutische overwegingen ten tijde van het consult.
