I would like to say that, at the very moment when Mr van Velzen was making this point in this House – at about 5 p.m. on Monday in Strasbourg, which was 11 a.m. in Cuba – I was talking to Mr Elizardo Sánchez, the director of the Cuban Committee for Human Rights and National Reconciliation, who, in the hall of his house, was showing me the photographs he had taken with José Maria Aznar, Felipe González and our fellow Member, Mário Soares.

Premièrement, la nécessité pour l'Europe de rester vigilante au sujet de l'autonomie et de la spécificité de la Région administrative spéciale de Macao ; deuxièmement, la nécessité pour l'Union européenne d'avoir une présence physique à travers un représentant ; troisièmement, la nécessité de renforcer le dialogue avec ce territoire, comme l'a fort bien dit notre collègue Mário Soares.
Firstly, to congratulate the rapporteur, Mr Soares, on his excellent report, with which he honours this Parliament, and to highlight three points made in this report: firstly, the need for Europe to remain vigilant over the autonomy and specific character of the Special Administrative Region of Macau; secondly, the need for the European Union to maintain a physical presence there through a representative; and thirdly, the need for closer relations and dialogue with that territory, as Mr Soares made very clear.
