Welcomes the efforts made by President Obama and the US Administration to breath new life in the Middle East peace process; regrets the decision of the Israeli government not to extend the moratorium on settlement building and calls on the US and the EU to make all efforts so as to bring the parties back to direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians in order to reach a comprehensive agreement to the conflict that ends the occupation that began in 1967 and results in the emergence of an independent, democratic, contiguous, and viable Palestinian state living side-by-side in peace and security with Israel and its other neighbours; urges the European Union to play a more active political role, also in the framework of the Quartet, and calls, in this context, for a more active European engagement vis-à-vis Syria and Lebanon;

The funds from today's decision will go towards helping the PA meet its objectives for social and economic development and institution-building under the Palestinian Reform and Development Plan. Only a political process – one which finally results in the exchange of land for peace, puts an end to the occupation and allows the emergence of a sovereign, viable, democratic and peaceful Palestinian state that is committed to coexisting alongside Israel, and is therefore also willing, of course, to acknowledge this right to coexist with Israel – only this situation can finally give Israel and, more importantly, the region as a whole the security, stability and peace, to which their people aspire.
