He will also tour different areas to see, on the spot, the difficulties with which they are confronted and the state of progress of projects carried out with the assistance of Community funds: the extension and modernization of ports and airports, for instance, in particular at Fort-de-France and Pointe-à-Pitre, the technology park in Martinique, hotel complexes in Guadeloupe, vocational training facilities and environmental protection schemes in French Guiana. While in French Guiana, Mr Millan will be visiting the Space Centre at Kourou, the launch site for the Ariane programme initiated by the European Space Agency (ESA) and developed by the company ARIANESPACE; the latter has placed in orbit more than 50 telecommunications and remote sensing satellites in recent years, i.e. half the world market in such launches. The European Community for its part is financing research to develop the use of space technology in both fields, telecommunications and remote observation of the Earth.
