Last weekend, the four presidents who govern the Europe-Mediterranean Assembly, namely the presidents of the parliaments of Egypt, Tunisia – which is currently presiding – of Greece, and I myself, met in Tunis and agreed that the dialogue between cultures and the problem of unemployment in the countries around the Mediterranean would be the theme of the forthcoming dialogue in March, and that we wanted, in June, to give particular attention to the Middle East and to the peace process there, which we hoped would actually be up and running at the time.

Si l’Union européenne veut que son message, son débat et sa politique euroméditerranéenne soient cohérents, elle ne peut laisser penser que les situations que nous avons connues ces derniers jours sont ignorées, en particulier les événements intervenus au cours du Sommet mondial de la société de l’information à Tunis et les arrestations de plusieurs dirigeants d’organisations de défense des droits de l’homme.
If the European Union wants its message, its debate and its Euro-Mediterranean policy to be coherent, it should not send out the message that the situations we have witnessed over recent days are being ignored, in particular during the World Summit on the Information Society in Tunisia and the arrests of several leaders of human rights organisations.

La chose la plus importante à laquelle nous devons réfléchir est que nous n’avons pas seulement une déclaration politique, nous avons aussi un plan d’action et nous disposons de deux ans pour faire de véritables progrès démontrables avant que ce sommet se réunisse à nouveau à Tunis.
The most important thing we must reflect on is that we do not just have a political declaration, we also have an action plan and we have two years in which to make some real demonstrable progress before this summit reconvenes in Tunis.

Société de l’information veut dire liberté, liberté de l’information, liberté de la circulation des informations, et c’est là où nous avons un problème: une société de l’information libre qui se réunit à Tunis pour parler de la liberté de la société de l’information, c’est comme si on envoyait un tout jeune enfant dans une cage aux lions pour qu’il y apprenne à manger.
Information society means freedom, freedom of information, freedom of circulation of information, and it is there that we have a problem: a free information society that meets in Tunis to discuss the freedom of the information society is like sending a small child into a cage of lions to learn how to eat.

Sur le plan financier, pour répondre directement à l'importante remarque de l'honorable député, c'est un domaine où nous avons une certaine expérience dans d'autres pays, les représentants de la Commission à Tunis multiplient leurs efforts pour lancer très prochainement deux programmes : l'un de soutien aux journalistes et l'autre de soutien aux organisations non-gouvernementales.
On the financial front, and this responds directly to the important point made by the honourable Member and it is an area where we have some experience in other countries, Commission representatives in Tunis are stepping up their efforts to launch very soon two programmes: one in support of journalists and the other in support of non-governmental organisations.
