In a third statement, the Presidency clearly formulated the EU’s demands to the Pakistani Government for it to: (i) restore the Constitution, (ii) create the necessary conditions to guarantee free and fair elections scheduled for January; (iii) release all political prisoners, including members of the judiciary, as well as Ms Asma Jahangir, UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief; (iv) honour the President’s commitment to step down as Army Chief of Staff by 15 November; (v) energetically pursue reconciliation with the political opposition; and(vi) relax the restrictions imposed on the media.
