Its basic goals are: increasing the speed with which vessels and capital become concentrated in the hands of the large maritime business groups; full liberalisation of maritime transport and related services; the assumption of a strategic role by EU bodies so as to express completely the full interests of capital in international organisations; sweeping changes to employment relations; devaluing and privatising maritime education to produce a cheap work force; imposing on dockers multiple duties, bureaucratic directives and regulations which do not improve safety conditions on vessels or the protection of human life at sea.

Après le naufrage de l’Erika il y a plus de quatre ans, j’ai voulu largement contribuer sous cette législature à renforcer la sécurité maritime, et je voudrais vous remercier particulièrement pour le soutien que vous m’avez apporté et dire, comme au début de mon intervention, que cette législature a été celle de la sécurité maritime; la législature sous laquelle l’Union européenne a enfin eu l’ambition et la détermination de protéger réellement ses côtes et de travailler au niveau international avec obstination, volonté et rigueur pour veiller à ce que cette protection ne s’applique pas seulement à nos côtes et à nos mers, mais aussi à toutes les eaux du globe.
Following the Erika accident more than four years ago, during your mandate I wished to help drastically improve safety at sea, and I wish to particularly thank your for the support that you have given me and say, as I said at the start of my speech, that this legislature has been the legislature of safety at sea; the legislature in which, finally, the European Union has had the ambition and the decisiveness to genuinely protect its coasts and also to work at international level with determination, will and rigour to ensure that this protection is not only applied to our coasts and our seas but to all the seas in the world.
