Aujourd’hui, nous avons, et c’est fâcheux, fait le chemin à rebours – une Europe des États et non un État européen – et regagné notre pré carré. Et les gens qui, autour de nous, nous ont célébrés comme un grand espoir et une chance à saisir, sont en fait les électeurs qui iront bientôt voter sans enthousiasme pour condamner le fait, Monsieur le Président, que par une métamorphose malheureuse, nous représentons le mal contre lequel nous nous sommes élevés et que nous pensions à tort avoir vaincu.
Today we have returned to that inauspicious past – a Europe of states but not a European state – and to our enclosure, and the people around us who hailed us as a great hope, as an opportunity to seize, are in fact people who will soon vote half-heartedly, and will once again condemn the fact that we are representing, through an ill-fated metamorphosis, Mr President, the evil we came out against and deceived ourselves that we had conquered.
