On the question of innovation in SMEs and craft industries the summit recommended that a) joint measures in the area of research and development be taken to strengthen the objectives of the Barcelona process to benefit initiatives aimed at the economic development of the Mediterranean partner countries and to increase the participation of SMEs on both sides of the Mediterranean in Community research and technological development programmes; b) the use of new technologies in SMEs be encouraged; c) measures geared to SME and craft industry requirements, especially in the area of technical and technological assistance and advice be introduced; and d) agencies be set up to act as liaison offices for promoting and applying technological innovation of SMEs and craft businesses.
