L’enregistrement en tant qu'indication géographique (IG) offre une protection étendue aux dénominations enregistrées. Il équivaut à un droit de propriété intellectuelle pour les produits qui ont une origine géographique particulière et qui possèdent des qualités ou une réputation imputables à cette origine.
Registration as a Geographical Indication (GI) gives wide protection to the registered names, functioning as an intellectual property right for products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.

La Commission européenne a approuvé aujourd’hui l’enregistrement de huit nouvelles dénominations de produits provenant de Croatie, de France, d'Allemagne, du Portugal et d’Espagne en tant qu'indications géographiques protégées (IGP) et appellations d’origine protégées (AOP).
The European Commission has approved today the registration of eight new product names from Croatia, France, Germany, Portugal and Spain as Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) and Protected Designations of Origin (PDO).

Conformément à l'article 10, paragraphe 1, point c), du règlement (UE) no 1151/2012, la partie à l'origine de l'opposition a fait valoir que l'enregistrement de la dénomination «Liliputas» en tant qu'indication géographique protégée compromettrait l'existence d'une dénomination partiellement homonyme, de marques et de produits qui ont été mis sur le marché polonais en toute légalité bien plus de cinq ans avant la date de publication au Journal officiel de l'Union européenne (15 juin 2013) de la demande d'enregistrement de la dénomination «Liliputas» en tant qu'indication géographique protégée. Selon cette même partie, cet enregistrement compromettrait l'existence du produit dénommé «Liliput», un fromage polonais présentant des caractéristiques similaires au fromage «Liliputas» et dont le nom est phonétiquement semblable au nom «Liliputas».
In accordance with Article 10(1)(c) of Regulation (EU) No 1151/2012 the opponent alleged that the registration of ‘Liliputas’ as a Protected Geographical Indication would jeopardise the existence of a partly identical name, of trade marks and of products which have been legally on the Polish market for significantly more than five years preceding the date the application for registration of the name ‘Liliputas’ as Protected Geographical Indication was published in the Official Journal of the European Union (15 June 2013); according to the opponent, that registration would be a threat to the existence of the product named ‘Liliput’, which is a Polish cheese having characteristics similar to ‘Liliputas’ cheese and whose name is phonetically similar to the name ‘Liliputas’.

Les indications géographiques concernant des produits de pays tiers qui sont protégés dans l’Union au titre d’un accord international auquel l’Union est partie contractante peuvent être inscrites dans le registre visé au premier alinéa en tant qu’indications géographiques protégées au titre du présent règlement.
Geographical indications pertaining to products of third countries that are protected in the Union pursuant to an international agreement to which the Union is a contracting party may be entered in the register referred to in the first paragraph as geographical indications protected under this Regulation.
