À la suite d'un référendum qui s'est tenu en 2009, Mayotte, alors collectivité d'outre-mer française, située au nord de Madagascar, dans l'océan Indien, a acquis le statut de département d'outre-mer français le 31 mars 2011; par lettre du 26 octobre 2011, le président français a demandé au président du Conseil européen d'engager la procédure prévue à l'article 355, paragraphe 6, du traité FUE aux fins de l'adoption d'une décision modifiant le statut de Mayotte, pour le faire passer de celui de pays ou territoire d'outre-mer à celui de région ultrapériphérique.
Following a referendum in 2009, the then French overseas community Mayotte, located north of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, became an overseas department of France as from 31 March 2011, and by letter of 26 October 2011, the President of France therefore asked the President of the European Council to initiate the procedure in accordance with Article 355(6) TFEU to adopt a decision amending the status of Mayotte under the EU Treaties from an overseas country or territory to an outermost region.
