Lyle Vanclief (Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, when we make any changes in the administration of the roles and duties of the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food in Canada, we do it in such a way that we can maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of it so that every producer in Canada and everybody in the agri-food industry can be treated fairly and equitably. Wherever the actual people are does not really matter because the department is there to service all Canadians and all of the industry in every province.

Healthy rural communities are essential to a healthy agricultural food sector.

By unanimous consent, it was ordered, — That, in relation to its consideration of the government's future role in agriculture, the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food be authorized to travel in Canada, from February 18 to 22, 2002, from March 11 to 15, 2002, and from March 18 to March 22, 2002, to meet with Canadian farmers and other stakeholders in the agri-food sector, that the said Committee be composed of six government members and of five opposition members from the various opposition parties, and that the necessary staff do accompany the Committee.

In closing, I want to remind the House and everyone in Canada that the agri-food industry from the primary producer to the consumer, including the retail and the restaurant and hotel industry, employs 15 per cent of Canadian workers.
