J'appelle mes collègues à avoir une chose à l'esprit quand il est question du développement futur de l'Europe: ne faites pas la même erreur que celle commise par le président Prodi qui, lorsqu'il était président de la Commission, a dit que cela n'était qu'un premier pas vers un traité ultérieur porteur de nouveaux changements. L'erreur tient en ce que les gens qui s'expriment par référendum posent cette question: à quoi sert de voter pour ce traité si nous devrons à nouveau voter pour un autre traité à une date ultérieure?
I would appeal to colleagues when we speak about the future development of Europe not to make the same mistake that President Prodi made when he was President of Commission by saying that this is only the first step towards a further treaty and further treaties which will bring about change, because the people who vote in the referendum ask the question: what is the point in voting on this treaty if we have to vote again on another one at some future date?
