That said, the democratic opposition has been adopting a more mature approach towards challenging Lukashenko. Instead of watching from the sidelines, staging boycotts and failing to turn even its limited opportunities and influence to its advantage, as happened during the 2000 general election, it now favours participation, an approach it used at the last presidential election, when, although somewhat fragmented, it nonetheless managed to convey to the public the importance of democratic values and highlight the different approaches and proposals put forward for delivering the country from its plight.
