Les statistiques sur les entreprises au sens large font dès lors l’objet d’une forte demande afin de soutenir le processus de prise de décision, mais aussi d’aider les entreprises et les citoyens européens à comprendre les répercussions de ces politiques; il convient de distinguer entre les grandes entreprises, les entreprises à moyenne capitalisation et les petites et moyennes entreprises, pour lesquelles il existe un besoin accru de statistiques détaillées et harmonisées.
Accordingly, business statistics in the broad sense are in heavy demand to support the decision-making process but also to help European citizens and businesses understand the impact of those policies, differentiating between large enterprises, mid-caps and small and medium-sized enterprises for which there is an increased need for detailed and harmonised statistics.

Le programme ne couvre pas les mesures prévues par le programme pour la modernisation des statistiques européennes sur les entreprises et sur le commerce (ci-après dénommé le «programme MEETS»), établi par la décision no 1297/2008/CE du Parlement européen et du Conseil (9), lequel s’achève le 31 décembre 2013. Il comprend en revanche des objectifs dans le domaine des statistiques sur les entreprises et sur le commerce qui devraient être mis en œuvre de 2014 à 2017.
