9. This year is the fifth anniversary of the historically largest EU expansion, in 2004, which was the symbolic and practical culmination of the successful process of reunifying a previously divided continent; and this year Europe celebrates 20 years since the fall of the Iron Curtain, which enabled the countries of the former Soviet bloc to return to freedom and democracy.

Witnesses from Nunavik in northern Quebec drew our attention to the fact that: Inuit in that region had not been able to obtain a groundfish licence through their land claims process; the only option available was the purchase of an existing licence(s); and Nunavik’s 0B turbot quota was only 140 tonnes, or 2.5% of the TAC, despite having helped develop the fishery in northern waters in 1985 (in the area of 2G).

To the Eurosceptics in this Parliament, and also to the United States, who are quite happy about this discord among the EU Member States and see it as proof that it is unlikely that anything will ever come of one joint European policy, I would say this: this Parliament is a European institution that, in its pronouncement in its last resolution, gave a voice to the vast majority of the European population and that voice says ‘no war’.
