Recalls the importance of tourism to the European economy, to the European natural and cultural heritage and to particular countries and regions where it is an economic and social mainstay; draws attention to the significance of the new provision on tourism that is now included in the Lisbon Treaty, giving Parliament legislative powers in the field of tourism for the first time, and to the need to exercise those powers to make the sector more competitive; reiterates its concern that no budget line to assist in the development of tourism has been established to reflect this new challenge and insists that in future adequate levels of EU support for tourism must be provided through the establishment of a dedicated budget line for sustainable economic development, industrial heritage and protection of the natural and cultural heritage, aided where appropriate by the Structural Funds and other funds.

Calls on the Turkish Government fully to consider the sustainability and environmental consequences of its plans for new water and energy infrastructure under the South-East Anatolia Project (GAP), which threaten to destroy the environment and the unique landscape of many regions, and, in particular, the project’s impact on neighbouring Iraq; stresses especially the need to ensure that the draft law on nature protection and biodiversity is amended so as to preserve the cultural and archaeological heritage in full accordance with European standards and to allocate responsibility for nature protection clearly within the executive; calls on the Government to adopt a more ambitious policy framework, underpinned by specific action plans, to combat the growth of carbon emissions;

Dans le cadre du nouveau programme culture 2007-2013, à l’instar de ce qui était prévu par son prédécesseur, le programme Culture 2000, la Commission a soutenu des initiatives relatives à la préservation du patrimoine culturel dans la perspective du Prix du patrimoine culturel de l'Union européenne, dont l’organisation a été confiée à l’organisme Europa Nostra.
Within the framework of the new Culture programme 2007-2013, as was the case of its predecessor, the Culture 2000 programme, the Commission has supported initiatives related to the preservation of cultural heritage in the context of the European Cultural Heritage Prize, for which Europa Nostra has been selected as the organising body.

The 1998 "Communication on Sustainable Urban Development in the European Union: a Framework for Action" led to the inclusion of urban environmental considerations in the Commission guidelines for regional development programmes 2000-2006, contributed to the renewal of the URBAN initiative (approximately 728 MEUR), and supported the development of the City of Tomorrow and Cultural Heritage research programme.
