Recognises that cultural heritage plays a vital role in several of the Europe 2020 flagship initiatives, such as the Digital Agenda, the Innovation Union, the Agenda for New Skills and Jobs and the industrial policy for the globalisation era; calls, therefore, for greater recognition of the role of European cultural heritage as a strategic resource for smart, sustainable, and inclusive growth in the mid-term review of the Europe 2020 strategy;

9. souligne qu'il est possible de développer le tourisme culturel dans les régions rurales, insulaires, côtières et montagneuses qui offrent une nature et des paysages intacts, des langues régionales et des dialectes minoritaires, une culture traditionnelle (arts populaires traditionnels, costumes, artisanat, festivals locaux, culture de la mobilité, traditions gastronomiques), des produits et des services artisanaux locaux, l'authenticité, un patrimoine industriel et agricole ainsi qu'un patrimoine culturel propre aux minorités ethniques; rappelle que le tourisme culturel dans ces régions contribue à la diversification des activités économiques traditionnelles et au maintien de la population sur le territoire, afin d'éviter le dépeuplement, l'abandon et la détérioration de nombreux sites d'une grande valeur culturelle ainsi que des traditions et de la culture traditionnelle; invite les États membres à développer une connectivité intermodale durable et à améliorer la connectivité transfrontalière – et notamment le développement de nouvelles technologies de l'information et de la communication, telles que des services intégrés de planification des transports et de billetterie – afin de rendre plus attrayantes et accessibles, par les transports aériens, maritimes, routiers et ferroviaires, les destinations touristiques en général et les destinations touristiques plus petites et éloignées en particulier;
9. Underlines the potential for boosting cultural tourism in rural, island, coastal and mountainous regions which offer intact nature and landscapes, regional or minority languages and dialects, traditional culture (traditional folk arts, costumes, handcrafts, local festivals, a mobility culture, gastronomic traditions), local artisanal products and services, authenticity, industrial and agricultural heritage, and the cultural heritage of ethnic minorities; points out that cultural tourism in these regions helps to diversify traditional economic activities and encourage local populations to remain, thereby averting depopulation and the abandonment and deterioration of many valuable cultural sites and preventing traditions and customs from dying out; calls on the Member States to develop sustainable intermodal infrastructure and improve cross-border connectivity – including the development of new information and communication technologies, such as integrated travel planning and ticketing services – as a means of enhancing the appeal and accessibility by air, sea, road and rail of tourist destinations in general and of smaller and remote tourist destinations in particular;

26. se félicite des nouvelles initiatives telles que l'année européenne du patrimoine culturel qui permettent de mieux sensibiliser le public à la protection du patrimoine européen matériel et immatériel; invite la Commission, le Conseil et les États membres à redoubler d'efforts pour promouvoir le patrimoine industriel européen, qui représente un intérêt culturel commun dont le potentiel n'a pas encore été pleinement reconnu;
26. Welcomes new initiatives, such as the European Year of Cultural Heritage, that increase awareness of the need to protect of Europe’s tangible and intangible heritage; calls on the Commission, the Council and the Member States to do more to promote Europe’s industrial heritage as part of its shared cultural interest, the potential of which has not yet been sufficiently recognised;

This may include the full range of heritage: cultural heritage (including cultural itineraries), contemporary culture, protected natural sites, health and wellbeing (including spa tourism), educational, wine and food, historical, sport or religious tourism, agri-tourism, rural tourism, or tourism capitalising on the maritime and sub-aquatic cultural heritage, industrial heritage or the economic fabric of a region.

As cinematographic works are essential components of the European cultural and art heritage and at the same time they represent an industrial potential as well as an element of competitiveness, the goal of the proposed Recommendation is to encourage the Member States to take action in order to ensure the preservation of the European film heritage and to foster the better exploitation of the potential therein.

The "City of Tomorrow and Cultural Heritage" research programme supports research projects on the revitalisation of city centres and neighbourhoods (including the rehabilitation and re-use of contaminated and brownfield sites), sustainable retrofitting of urban areas such as large housing estates and on ways to reduce urban sprawl, especially through the integration of land use and transport planning.
