Notes that religious minorities in Islamic Turkey are in a very precarious situation; notes that the Orthodox and Catholic communities still do not possess legal personality, that churches cannot acquire property and that property which has been seized has still not been returned; observes that religious minorities in Turkey are victims not only of discrimination and all manner of administrative harassment but also of growing violence; considers the judgment of 26 June 2007 by the Turkish Court of Cassation concerning the Patriarch of Constantinople illustrative of Turkey's treatment of its religious minorities; considers it unacceptable that an official candidate for membership of the EU should violate the rights and freedoms of religious minorities and calls on Turkey, without delay, to adopt a law on foundations which puts an end to the existing legal uncertainty and to adopt clear provisions which fully guarantee freedom of religious practice and permit religious minorities, inter alia, to acquire immovable property and train clergy; expects financial aid to Turkey, in future, to be made conditional on protection of the Christian heritage;

14. insiste sur la nécessité d'adopter sans tarder une loi sur les fondations pour répondre à l'insécurité juridique actuelle à laquelle sont confrontées les minorités religieuses et pour fixer clairement un cadre juridique qui les habilite à exercer librement leur foi en les autorisant, entre autres, à détenir un bien immobilier et à former leur clergé; partage l'inquiétude qu'a inspiré au Conseil, le 24 juillet 2007, le récent arrêt rendu par la Cour de cassation de Turquie sur le Patriarcat œcuménique; invite instamment le nouveau gouvernement turc à mettre son approche des minorités religieuses en adéquation avec les principes de la liberté religieuse tels que définis par la Convention européenne de sauvegarde des droits de l'homme et des libertés fondamentales et la jurisprudence de la Cour européenne des droits de l'homme; demande à la Commission d'aborder ces problèmes avec le nouveau gouvernement turc; appelle la Commission à déterminer de quelle manière l'instrument de pré-adhésion peut être employé pour protéger le patrimoine chrétien;
14. Stresses the need to adopt a Law on Foundations without delay that addresses the current legal uncertainty of religious minorities and sets a clear legal framework enabling them to exercise their religion freely by allowing them, inter alia, to own property and train clergy; shares the concern expressed by the Council on 24 July over the recent ruling of the Turkish Court of Cassation on the Ecumenical Patriarchate; urges the new Turkish Government to bring its approach towards religious minorities into line with principles of freedom of religion as defined by the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights; calls on the Commission to raise these issues with the new government; also invites the Commission to indicate how the Pre-Accession Instrument can be used for the protection of the Christian heritage;

Dans de nombreux cas, les immigrés et leurs enfants n’ont aucune considération pour la population autochtone; au contraire, ils exigent de plus en plus de droits pour eux-mêmes et semblent déterminés à éradiquer notre patrimoine chrétien occidental; inversement, ils se contentent de faire la sourde oreille lorsqu’il est question des droits civiques ou des obligations incombant à tout nouvel arrivant, notamment la volonté de s’intégrer.
In many cases, immigrants and their children have no consideration for the native population; on the contrary, they demand more and more rights for themselves and seem bent on eradicating our Western Christian heritage; conversely, they simply turn a deaf ear when it comes to civic duties or to obligations of any incomer, such as willingness to integrate.

- (EN) Monsieur le Président, la démolition présumée, en décembre 2005, du cimetière arménien médiéval de Julfa - également connu historiquement sous le nom de Jugha -, avec la destruction des khachkars, qui sont des pierres tombales superbement gravées, constitue une grave profanation du patrimoine chrétien européen.
– Mr President, the alleged demolition in December 2005 of the mediaeval Julfa – also known historically as Jugha – Armenian burial grounds, with the breaking-up of the khachkars, or beautifully engraved headstones, is a serious desecration of European Christian heritage.

C'est pourtant le patrimoine chrétien qui a protégé les droits des minorités au Canada et qui donne aux Canadiens le droit de croire en ce qu'ils veulent, contrairement à la situation qui existe pour tellement de gens ailleurs dans le monde.
Indeed it is that Christian heritage that has protected the rights of minorities in Canada and gives Canadians the right to believe as they choose, unlike the situation which exists for so many people in other areas of the world.

We are therefore asking Mr. Chrétien to act accordingly (1300) Mr. Paul Crête (Kamouraska-Rivière-du-Loup, BQ): Mr. Speaker, I think that the Heritage critic did a good job of demonstrating how inefficient the Department of Canadian Heritage is.

Je ne vote peut-être pas pour le parti du Patrimoine chrétien, ni le Parti libertaire, ni le Parti national—et je pourrais en citer d'autres—mais je pense néanmoins qu'ils devraient avoir la possibilité de présenter des candidats et les électeurs avoir celle de voter pour eux.
I may not vote for the Christian Heritage Party, the Libertarian Party, or the National Party—and I could list others—but I do think they should have the ability to be on a ballot, and I do think people should have the option to vote for them.
