Looks forward to the speedy implementation of the repeated calls for democratisation and political reforms inside the CCP by the new party leadership; believes that only effective political reforms aimed at shaping inclusive, democratic and accountable institutions that reflect China’s ethnic, religious, political and social diversity will pave the way for building sustainable growth and stability and curb the semi-independence of high-handed provincial, district and local party bosses, who badly damage the reputation of China’s national leadership both internally and externally through their abuses of power, with particular reference to the very costly and endemic cases of corruption; considers that such cases should be tackled through the introduction of accountability mechanisms, as acknowledged by Chairman Hu Jintao during the 18th CCP Congress of November 2012;

D. whereas this deterioration in the situation is demonstrated by the thousands of death sentences passed and the hundreds of executions carried out, growing numbers of arrests, imprisonments, farcical trials and convictions of representatives of the China Democracy Party, the extremely brutal repression of the Falun Gong religious movement, constant interference in the affairs of religious movements not under the control of the Communist Party, the constant deterioration of the political and humanitarian situation in Tibet, East Turkestan and Inner Mongolia, the increasing number of verbal threats issued against the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the slow but steady erosion of freedoms in Hong Kong,

I. noting that the situation regarding human rights and fundamental freedoms in the People’s Republic of China has deteriorated considerably over the last 18 months, as demonstrated by the thousands of death sentences and hundreds of executions, the increase in the number of arrests, imprisonments, farcical trials and sentencing of representatives of the Chinese Democratic Party, the brutal repression of the Falun Gong religious movement, the constant interference in the life of religious movements not in thrall to the Communist Party, the constant deterioration in the political and humanitarian situation in Tibet, eastern Turkistan and Inner Mongolia, the increasing number of verbal threats against the Republic of China (Taiwan), and the slow but constant reduction in freedoms in Hong Kong,
