Il a été l’un des premiers pays avec lesquels les Communautés européennes ont établi des relations diplomatiques il y a plus de 50 ans et le premier pays d’Amérique latine à signer un accord de partenariat économique, ainsi que de coordination et de coopération politique avec l’UE.
It was one of the first countries with which the European Communities established diplomatic relations over 50 years ago and the first country in Latin America to sign an agreement for an economic partnership, political coordination and cooperation with the EU.

Cette communication s'inscrit dans le cadre de la «déclaration sur le renforcement du partenariat économique» adoptée lors du sommet UE/États-Unis à Dromoland Castle (Irlande) en 2004 au cours duquel les parties intéressées ont présenté des idées sur les possibilités d'approfondir l'intégration économique transatlantique. Le partenariat revisité et renforcé est ainsi le moyen de donner un nouvel élan aux relations entre l'UE et les États-Unis.
This communication is in line with the "EU-US Declaration on Strengthening our Economic Partnership" (PDF), which was adopted at the EU-US Summit at Dromoland Castle (Ireland) in 2004, during which the parties concerned put forward ideas on how to strengthen transatlantic economic integration. Reviewing and strengthening the partnership in this way can lend new impetus to relations between the EU and the United States.
