Trentin pour l'excellent et très opportun rapport qu'il a élaboré sur l'évaluation annuelle de l'application des programmes de stabilité et de convergence, auquel j'accorde mon soutien, en particulier quant à la nécessité de revoir, dans le contexte actuel, les critères de rigidité monétaire et budgétaire imposés par le pacte de stabilité et de croissance et par les programmes de stabilité et de convergence. En effet, cette rigidité a freiné la croissance économique au sein de l'Union européenne, elle n'a pas pallié les niveaux élevés de chômage et d'inégalité et n'est pas parvenue à garantir un développement durable.
– (PT) I congratulate Mr Trentin on his excellent and timely report on the annual assessment of the implementation of the stability and convergence programmes, which I fully support, especially with regard to the need in the current context to review the criteria for monetary and budgetary rigidity imposed by the Stability and Growth Pact and by the stability and convergence programmes, because this rigidity has stifled economic growth in the European Union, has failed to provide a response to the high levels of unemployment and inequality and has not ensured sustainable development.
