WHEREAS an Association known as the Canadian Red Cross Society has been in operation for some years past, and was actively engaged during the late war in South Africa in contributing funds and tending the sick and wounded; and whereas the said association was in affiliation with the Society in England known as " The National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War" , and the work, operations and powers of the last named Society have now been transferred to and are being carried on, under the patronage of His Majesty King Edward the Seventh, by the British Red Cross Society, with which the Canadian Red Cross Society has now become affiliated; and whereas the International Conference of Geneva of 1863 recommended: " That there should exist in every country a Committee whose mission consists in co-operating in times of war with the hospital service of the armies by all means in its power" ; and whereas it is expedient that there should be a permanent organization in Canada in affiliation with the British Red Cross Society to carry out the purposes of the said treaty, and especially to secure supplies and to execute the humane objects contemplated by the said treaty, with the power to adopt and use the distinctive flag and badge specified by the said treaty in Article 7, on which shall be the sign of the Red Cross, and for the purpose of co-operating with the " Comité International de Secours aux Militaires Blessés" ; and whereas it is expedient that the existing association in Canada should be incorporated for the purposes aforesaid: Therefore His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:—

Is concerned about speculative attacks on Greek government bonds by investment banks (Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan etc), hedge funds and credit rating agencies; calls for a common and co-ordinated response from the whole EU and its Member States to these attacks; stresses in this context the need to firmly control hedge funds and private equity inside the EU and to prohibit so called ‘over-the-counter’ businesses;

The purpose of the Committee’s study was to examine the adequacy of contingency planning and preparation by relevant Canadian government departments and agencies prior to the evacuation in the summer of 2006; the response of the Canadian Government to the need for such an evacuation, including the actual operations of the evacuation and the communication and coordination strategies that were developed and put in place; and, the challenges facing officials in attempting to locate, protect, and evacuate the Canadians in Lebanon.

As the sole arbiter of proposed mergers and concentrations between companies which have an aggregate worldwide turnover in excess of ECU 5 billion and individual turnover of ECU 250 million in Europe, of at least two of the companies concerned, the European Commission invites governments and companies, before 31 March 1996, to a wide ranging debate centred, essentially, on the three following themes: - a reduction in the thresholds which give exclusive control to the Commission being ECU 2 billion for worldwide sales (in place of ECU 5 billion) and ECU 100 million (instead of ECU 250 million).; - should such a reduction not be achieved, exclusive control for the Commission for those mergers which fall between "the old and the new thresholds" and which have to be notified to several national competition authorities; this approach would save both time and money; - a series of options giving answer to the criticisms formulated, not only by the business world, but equally by certain Member States, as regards cooperative joint venture operations which do not fall under the rules of the Merger Regulation but under the "general" rules regarding competition policy (in particular Article 85 of the Treaty).
