I therefore welcome Parliament’s decision to keep up the pressure on these regimes by taking the decision to create a mechanism for monitoring cases in which the winners have been prevented from receiving their deserved prize or from returning to the European Parliament, as in the cases of Oswaldo Payá, of Aung San Suu Kyi, who is still under house arrest in Myanmar, and of the Women in White, who were winners in 2005 and who were prevented by Fidel Castro’s regime in Cuba from receiving the prize.

23. décide de renforcer les contacts avec les anciens lauréats du prix Sakharov en vue de faire jouer à ce prix un rôle protecteur et de contribuer à faire respecter les droits humains dans les pays concernés; insiste tout particulièrement sur la poursuite et le renforcement du soutien aux anciens lauréats du prix Sakharov qui continuent d'être victimes de la répression dans leur pays, notamment Leyla Zana, Aung San Suu Kyi et Oswaldo Payá Sardinas; concernant ce dernier, rappelle le soutien apporté à l'initiative Sakharov menée au sein du Parlement européen et en appelle aux autorités cubaines pour qu'elles cessent d'empêcher Oswaldo Payá Sardinas de gagner l'Union européenne et d'y rencontrer ses institutions;

Decides to retain closer contacts with former winners of the Sakharov Prize to enable the prize to play a role in safeguarding and helping to ensure respect for human rights in the countries concerned; stresses, in particular, the need to continue and increase support for former Sakharov Prize winners who are still suffering from repression in their country, in particular Leyla Zana, Aung San Suu Kyi and Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas; with regard to the last of these, recalls the support given to the 'Sakharov Initiative' conducted within the European Parliament and calls on the Cuban authorities to refrain from placing any further obstacles in the way of Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas travelling to the European Union to meet with its institutions;
