Voici une liste des domaines pour lesquels, de l'avis du groupe, des recherches seraient utiles : - recherche visant à déterminer s'il y a eu transmission de l'ESB à l'homme; - dans le cadre des travaux sur l'hypothèse selon laquelle l'ESB est transmissible à l'homme, diverses suggestions quant à l'évaluation du risque sont avancées, et notamment les suivantes : travaux relatifs à la détermination d'un éventuel effet cumulatif de doses multiples, estimation de l'utilisation d'abats pour la fabrication de divers produits alimentaires avant l'interdiction et consommation de ces produits par les divers groupes d'âge, critères socio-économiques; - les produits obtenus à partir de bovins infectés par l'ESB, autres que les ASB (abats spécifiques de bovins) sont-ils infectieux ? - poursuite des recherches visant à établir la raison ou la voie précises de la transmission maternelle de l'ESB dans certains cas; - déterminer s'il est possible que l'ESB ait été une maladie spontanée (rare) chez les bovins et que l'agent de cette maladie soit différent de l'agent de la tremblante; - l'ESB peut-elle être transmise aux porcs par voie orale ? - recherche sur la mise au point de techniques de diagnostic applicable à l'ESB et à la MCJ; - déterminer l'efficacité des procédures d'inactivation de l'ESB utilisées dans les industries alimentaire et pharmaceutique; - préconiser certains domaines de recherche concernant le traitement thérapeutique des victimes de la MCJ et la mise au point d'un test visant à déterminer si ces personnes sont sensibles à la maladie; - Il est également proposé une recherche prospective étant donné que la MCJ apparaît rarement chez des individus présentant certains gènes.

The following is a list of areas considered by the group as worthy of research : - research aimed at establishing whether or not BSE has been transmitted to man; - working on the hypothesis that BSE may be transmissible to man, a number of suggestions are put forward aimed at establishing a risk assessment such as work on determining whether multiple dosing is cumulative and an estimation of the utilisation of offal in different human food products prior to the ban and the consumption of those products by individual age groups and socio-economic criteria; - is there infectivity in BSE-infected cattle derived products other than SBO (Specified Bovine Offal) ?; - further research to establish the precise reason or route for maternal transmission of BSE in some cases; - establish if it is possible that BSE originated as a (rare) spontaneous event in cattle and that the BSE agent is different from the scrapie agent; - can BSE be transmitted orally to pigs ?; - research into the development of diagnostic techniques for BSE and CJD; - establish the efficiency of BSE inactivation procedures used in the food and pharmaceutical industry; - certain areas are suggested for research into developing therapeutic treatment for victims of the CJD disease and also into developing a test which would indicate those people susceptible to the disease; - predictive research is also proposed as it has been shown that CJD occurs rarely in individuals with certain genes.
