As Directive 95/46/EC has been transposed by the Member States since the adoption of Regulation (EC) No 515/97, and the Commission has established an independent authority to ensure that freedoms and fundamental rights of persons are respected by Community institutions and bodies in the processing of personal data in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 45/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 December 2000 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data by the Community institutions and bodies and on the free movement of such data (12), the personal data protection control measures should be aligned and the reference to the European Ombudsman should be replaced by a reference to the European Data Protection Supervisor, without prejudice to the powers of the Ombudsman.

Il est souhaitable de prendre des mesures de façon à permettre au Médiateur de renforcer sa coopération avec des institutions similaires aux niveaux national et international, ainsi qu’avec des institutions nationales ou internationales, même si leur champ d’activité est plus large que celui du Médiateur européen — en ce qui concerne, par exemple, la protection des droits de l’homme —, cette coopération pouvant contribuer positivement à rendre plus efficace l’action du Médiateur.
It is desirable to take steps so as to allow the Ombudsman to develop his or her cooperation with similar institutions at national and international level, as well as with national or international institutions, even where they cover a wider range of activities than the European Ombudsman — such as the protection of human rights — since such cooperation may make a positive contribution towards enhancing the efficiency of the Ombudsman's action.

6. est d'avis que, en sa qualité de commission compétente pour les relations avec le Médiateur européen, la commission des pétitions devra être informée de la procédure de signature d'un accord interinstitutionnel entre le Parlement européen et le Médiateur européen et y participer; déplore qu'il n'en soit pas allé de la sorte lors de la signature du nouvel accord interinstitutionnel conclu entre le Parlement européen et le Médiateur le 15 mars 2006, qui est en vigueur depuis le 1er avril de la même année;

Considers that the Committee on Petitions, as the committee responsible for relations with the European Ombudsman, should be informed and take part in the process of signing an interinstitutional agreement between the European Parliament and the European Ombudsman; regrets the fact that this did not occur during the signing of the new interinstitutional agreement concluded between the European Parliament and the Ombudsman on 15 March 2006, which entered into force on 1 April of the same year;

Q. whereas the Ombudsman, replying to the Commission's opinion on 27 June 2002, regretted the negative views on the proposal suggested in a letter dated 17 December 2002 to the President of the European Parliament that, due to the length of time this topic has been under discussion and the important legal developments that have taken place in the EU, that the European Parliament withdraw the amendments submitted for Council's approval under Article 195 of EC Treaty, and that the services of the Ombudsman and the European Parliament jointly examine the question of the revision of the Ombudsman's Statute when a new European Ombudsman has taken office on 1 April 2003,
