Le Médiateur européen, P. Nikiforos Diamandouros, a demandé à la Commission européenne de verser 1 500 euros à titre gracieux à plusieurs étudiants de pays tiers, qui ont participé au programme de bourse d'étude Erasmus Mundus I de l'UE. Ceci fait suite à une plainte d'un étudiant canadien qui a affirmé que ses camarades et lui-même, en cursus de Master en aéronautique et technologies spatiales, avaient été mal informés sur les aspects financiers de cette bourse.
The European Ombudsman, P. Nikiforos Diamandouros, has asked the European Commission to make an ex-gratia payment of EUR 1 500 to each of several students from outside the European Union, who participated in the EU scholarship programme Erasmus Mundus I. This follows a complaint from a Canadian student who claimed that he and his fellow students, who followed a Master's Course in Aeronautics and Space Technology, had been misinformed about the financial aspects of their scholarship.

En conclusion, je souhaiterais exprimer ma satisfaction quant au fait que seuls 8 % des enquêtes menées par le Médiateur européen avaient trait au Parlement européen, alors que presque 66 % d'entre-elles concernaient la Commission européenne.
In conclusion, I would like to express satisfaction that only 8% of the investigations instigated by the Ombudsman related to the European Parliament, while almost 66% related to the European Commission.

J’ai officié en tant que rapporteur sur le rapport annuel relatif aux activités du Médiateur européen en 2004 et je tiens à souligner qu’en comparaison avec l’année en question, durant laquelle les plaintes avaient progressé de 53% par rapport à l’année précédente, le Médiateur a reçu en 2005 un total de 3920 plaintes, soit une augmentation de l’ordre de 5%.
I acted as rapporteur for the annual report on the activities of the European Ombudsman in 2004 and I wish to point out that, compared with that year, during which complaints rose by 53% over the previous year, in 2005 the Ombudsman received a total of 3 920 complaints, in other words an increase in the order of 5%.

On 26 May the Ombudsman made public allegations to the Parliament’s Committee on Constitutional Affairs concerning the difficulties he had encountered in gaining access to documents concerning the Thessaloniki underground railway. He said that he could not guarantee to the European Parliament or the citizens that the truth would emerge from the investigation that he was conducting, since it was blatantly clear from the five oral depositions which he had taken from the officials who were involved in the affair that these had been made on behalf of and on the advice of management, on the one hand, and on the other hand that the officials were bound by an undertaking to maintain professional secrecy.
