– (DE) Mr President, Mr Vice-President of the Commission, I should like to start by thanking you, Mr Vice-President, on behalf of the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats, for the role you have played as mediator, which has been very important in achieving this compromise, but I would also, of course, like to offer very sincere thanks particularly to the rapporteur, Mr Mauro, and to the former chairman, Mr Costa, who is still actively involved in things, not to mention Mr Lewandowski, for bringing this compromise about.

The Council of the European Union stated that it took note at the beginning of 1995 of the report of the European Union's observer for Cyprus and reviewed the question of Cyprus' accession.
