Je demandais, au début de mon allocution, si les langues restent importantes de nos jours. Aux yeux de nos citoyens, les langues n’ont jamais été aussi importantes qu’aujourd’hui.
At the start of my presentation, I asked the question of whether language`s still matter. In the eyes of our citizens, languages have never been as important as they are today.

Pribetich de m’avoir donné la possibilité d’entamer mon allocution consacrée à un sujet hautement technique sur un vers de mon poète français favori, Guillaume Apollinaire: «Il est grand temps de rallumer les étoiles».
− (DE) Mr President, Mr President-in-Office of the Council, ladies and gentlemen, I am very grateful to Mr Pribetich for giving me the opportunity to begin a speech on a highly technical subject with a line from a poem by my favourite French poet Guillaume Apollinaire: ‘Il est grand temps de rallumer les étoiles’.

– (DE) Monsieur le Président, Mesdames et Messieurs, je voudrais commencer mon allocution en apportant tout mon soutien aux propos du rapporteur et en demandant aux commissions parlementaires spécialisées de se concentrer essentiellement sur des projets offrant une valeur ajoutée européenne lorsqu’elles examineront sous peu, je l’espère, les projets pilotes et les actions préparatoires.
– (DE) Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I want to begin by strongly supporting the words of the rapporteur and also by appealing to Parliament’s specialist committees really to concentrate on projects with European added value when it comes to what I hope will be prompt consideration of the pilot projects and preparatory actions.

Mais dans mon allocution finale en tant que président, je vais exiger que le Parlement soit étroitement associé à la recherche d’une solution, et je suis ravi que la présidence allemande ait fait savoir qu’elle demanderait au Parlement européen de nommer un représentant pour cette mission, et qu’elle formulerait la même demande auprès de la Commission et des États membres.
But in my final speech as President, I am going to demand that Parliament be closely involved in the search for a solution, and I am delighted that the German Presidency has informed me that it will ask the European Parliament to appoint a representative for this task, and it is going to ask the same of the Commission and the Member States.

Dans mon allocution d'aujourd'hui, j'aimerais premièrement aborder le principe qui fait de l'intégration européenne une cause digne d'être défendue, à savoir la solidarité.
I would like to start today by addressing the one principle that makes European integration such an attractive prospect, namely solidarity between Member States.

Je suis particulièrement heureuse de m’exprimer dans ma langue maternelle, qui deviendra bientôt une des langues officielles de l’Union européenne. Dès lors, la première partie de mon allocution sera en letton.
I am particularly pleased to speak my native language, which will soon become one of the official languages of the European Union, therefore the first part of my speech will be in Latvian.

In speaking this afternoon I commend to the House those budget lines that are dedicated to the work of the Petitions Committee and the European Ombudsman.

This is what is happening for example in my own area of work, with the first of the Treaties which I mentioned at the start, the one which created the European Coal and Steel Community, the ECSC Treaty which laid the foundation for the entire subsequent legal system, which basically kept to the text signed in 1951 apart from minor changes such as giving the name "Commission" to the body which up to then had been very appropriately called the "High Authority".
